to turn into a leaf and fall again

Hello and welcome to this week’s newsletter. October has arrived, the evenings are drawing in, and we seem to have entered one of those particularly busy stretches at the Poetry Pharmacy, with new things appearing on the shelves and plenty going on in all three of our shops.

We have a new prescription. Poetic Intelligence is our latest bottle of Poetry Pills, created in collaboration with the Association of Business Poets *as an antidote to Artificial Intelligence, and a celebration of that much stranger, messier and more mysterious thing: the human imagination.

Inside are poems to encourage curiosity, creative thinking and those unexpected leaps and connections that don’t necessarily follow the most logical route from A to B. Poetry doesn’t always give us the answer; it can slow us down, make us look again, leave room for uncertainty, surprise us, or send our thoughts off somewhere entirely unexpected.

At a time when we can summon information, answers and even words at extraordinary speed, Poetic Intelligence makes a small case for another kind of intelligence: imaginative, intuitive, emotional and curious.

An Antidote to Artificial Intelligence, for the Cultivation of Wonder & Original Thought, & the Preservation of the Wild Human Imagination.
Take when thoughts become predictable.

* We created Poetic Intelligence in collaboration with the Association of Business Poets, a growing professional community founded by Dr Kate Jenkinson. Its members include poets, coaches, facilitators and organisational professionals who bring poetry into the workplace as a way of encouraging creativity, fresh thinking, better communication and human connection. In other words, they’re interested in what happens when we make a little more room for imagination in places more accustomed to spreadsheets and bullet points.

Mother Tongues

Yesterday, for National Poetry Day, with its theme of Wonder, something really wonderful happened at the Poetry Pharmacy on Oxford Street.

Mother Tongues was the idea of Michał Kamil Piotrowski at the Experimental Writing School, as poets came together throughout the day to read, listen and share work, bringing different languages, cultures, histories and voices into our little space inside Lush.

In the middle of Oxford Street, surrounded by one of the busiest shopping streets in the world, an independent poetry business filled a corner of it with people reading poems to one another. There was something quietly radical about that. Human beings standing up and speaking in their own voices, and others stopping to listen. It was multilingual, multicultural, generous, surprising and properly wonderful.

Thank you to everyone who read, listened, travelled to be there, helped make it happen or simply wandered in and wondered what on earth was going on.

On National Poetry Day, it felt like a very good reminder of what poetry is for.

Book of the Month

Our October Book of the Month is Alice Oswald’s new Rhapsody: A Manifesto, and it couldn’t have arrived at a more appropriate moment.

In this exhilarating book, Oswald goes back to poetry’s beginnings as something spoken, remembered, sung and passed from one person to another. Beginning with Homer, she explores what happens when poetry lives in the voice and the body, moving through song, storytelling, memory, listening and the natural world, right up to the rather pressing question of artificial intelligence.

It’s a book about poetry as a living, communal and profoundly human thing, and about what might be lost when words become detached from the human voice that makes them.

After a week of thinking about Poetic Intelligence and filling our Oxford Street space with the voices of poets for Mother Tongues, it feels like exactly the right book for October.

Take a read of this thoughtful review of Alice Oswald’s Rhapsody: A Manifesto in the Guardian, tracing her journey through the spoken word from Homer to Ted Hughes.

Take with a free drink

Buy a copy of Rhapsody in our Bishop’s Castle or Oxford Street shops during October and we’ll treat you to a free drink from the Poetry Pharmacy café while you settle in for a read.

You can get a copy from us here.

And finally, a poem for you. A Short Story of Falling by Alice Oswald, a beautiful meditation on water, falling, and our place in the natural world.

Exploring the Poetry of Winter
Sunday 20th December, 11am-1pm
The Lab, Bishops Castle

Join Jan Westwood for a guided exploration of winter-themed poetry, with the theme of Comfort, Good Food and Warmth.

Winter is a season of great variety, when Shakespeare tells us ‘greasy Joan doth keel the pot ‘, and Dickinson sees snow which ‘sifts from Leaden Sieves ‘.

A time of ‘comfort, good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand’, according to Sitwell, but also when, 'Nothing burns like the cold’ as George RR Matin warns us.

A time of song, candlelight and family for some and loneliness for others when the earth is frozen and, as Laurie Lee reminds us, ‘the wind gnaws with teeth of glass’.

Let us sit together and enjoy poems which reveal winter in all its glory.

Jan was a teacher of English for over 40 years and has had her poems published in various anthologies. She has an MA in English Literature and chairs various poetry groups in person and online.

Ticket price includes tea or coffee and cake!
